Supering is one of the highest-leverage decisions a beekeeper makes all season, and it’s also one of the most misjudged. Add supers too early and the bees leave them empty and cold while heat escapes the brood nest. Add them too late and you either lose surplus that never gets stored or, worse, hand your colony a congestion problem that ends in a swarm. Getting the timing right is less about the calendar and more about reading what the colony and the landscape are telling you.

What a Nectar Flow Actually Looks Like
A nectar flow is a period when forage plants secrete nectar faster than the colony consumes it. It is driven by bloom timing, temperature, soil moisture, and time of day. You don’t need a botany degree to detect one — the bees broadcast it clearly if you know the signals.
- White wax — fresh, pale wax being drawn on frame tops and between boxes is the single most reliable sign bees have surplus energy to build comb.
- The smell test — lift the lid during a strong flow and you’ll catch a sweet, almost floral scent of curing nectar. It’s unmistakable once you’ve smelled it.
- Bearding and traffic — heavy forager traffic at the entrance in mid-morning, with returning bees visibly loaded, points to active foraging.
- Hive weight — a colony can gain 5 to 15 pounds a day during a peak flow. Hefting the back of the hive, or better, a scale, tells you the direction of travel.

When to Add the First Super
The rule of thumb most experienced keepers use: add your first super when the top brood box is about 70 to 80 percent full of bees and the colony is drawing or filling the outer frames. If seven or eight of ten frames are covered in bees and you see nectar arriving, the colony is ready for room.
Adding too early — in a cool, weak, or still-building colony — spreads the bees too thin. They struggle to keep brood warm and won’t move up into cold empty space. Adding too late is the more expensive mistake. A packed brood nest with no room to store incoming nectar is a textbook swarm trigger, and once the colony commits to swarming, your crop leaves with half the workforce.
A practical heuristic: it is almost always better to be a few days early than a few days late once a strong flow is confirmed. Bees can ignore an empty super for a while; they cannot un-swarm.
Queen Excluders: Use One or Not?
The queen excluder is the most debated piece of equipment in supering. It keeps the queen below and guarantees brood-free, cleaner honey supers. The tradeoff is that some bees are reluctant to pass through it, earning it the nickname “honey excluder” among skeptics.
- Use one if you want guaranteed brood-free comb, plan to extract and reuse frames, or run a lot of colonies where finding the queen every visit isn’t practical.
- Skip it if you’re running foundationless or comb honey, or if you find bees are slow to move up — some keepers get faster super occupation without one and simply manage the brood nest carefully.
- The bait trick — if bees hesitate at an excluder, move one frame of open, uncapped nectar up above it. Once nurse bees follow the brood pheromone and food, the rest come readily.
If you do use an excluder, make sure there’s at least one drawn or partially filled frame directly above it. Bees cross a barrier far more willingly toward work already started than toward bare foundation.

Drawn Comb vs. Foundation
What you put in the super matters as much as when you add it. Drawn comb — frames with fully built cells from a previous season — is honey in the bank. Bees can start storing nectar immediately, and a colony will fill drawn supers dramatically faster than foundation.
Foundation or foundationless frames require the bees to first secrete wax and build comb, which costs roughly 6 to 8 pounds of honey per pound of wax produced. During a strong flow bees will draw foundation readily; during a weak or uncertain flow they may ignore it entirely. The practical rules:
- Give drawn comb during marginal flows so the colony spends energy storing, not building.
- Give foundation during strong, reliable flows when you want to build up your stock of drawn comb for future years.
- Never checkerboard foundation into the brood nest during a dearth — you risk a poorly drawn, gappy comb the bees fill with drone cells.

Bottom Supering vs. Top Supering
Once your first super is filling, you have a choice about where the next one goes. Both methods work; they suit different goals.
- Top supering — add each new super on top of the stack. It’s the least disruptive, requires no heavy lifting of full boxes, and bees fill from the bottom up. The downside is bees can be slow to climb to the very top, occasionally leaving upper supers underfilled.
- Bottom supering (undersupering) — place the new empty super directly above the brood nest and below the partially filled ones. This keeps ripening honey moving up and away, and it exploits the bees’ instinct to store nectar close to the brood. It fills supers more uniformly but requires lifting and restacking heavy boxes.
Many keepers bottom-super during peak flow for maximum uptake, then switch to top supering late in the season when they’re just adding a little final space and don’t want the labor. Whichever you choose, keep boxes square and don’t leave gaps that invite burr comb.
A colony that runs out of storage room mid-flow doesn’t pause and wait. It backfills the brood nest, the queen loses laying space, and you’ve engineered a swarm without meaning to.
How Many Supers, and When to Stop
During a strong flow, stay ahead of the bees. A good target is to add the next super when the current one is about 70 percent full — roughly seven of ten frames with drawn, filling comb. This gives the colony room without over-extending it into cold, empty space.
A productive colony in a good year can fill three, four, or more medium supers. Don’t ration space out of caution during peak flow; congestion costs you more than empty boxes ever will. As the flow tapers — weight gain slows, white wax stops appearing, forager traffic drops — stop adding and let the bees finish capping what they have.
Honey is ready to harvest when it’s capped across roughly 80 percent or more of the frame, or when a shake test throws no nectar from uncapped cells. Capped honey has been dried by the bees to the right moisture, and pulling it too early risks fermentation.
Reading Your Land and Planning Forage
The best supering decisions start long before the flow, with an understanding of what blooms near your apiary and when. A spring flow off fruit trees and dandelion behaves differently than a summer flow off clover or a fall flow off goldenseal and aster. - Supering a weak colony — a struggling hive needs a tight, warm nest, not more space. Build the colony up first.
- Leaving supers on during dearth — empty wet supers left after the flow invite robbing and wax moths. Pull them once filling stops.
- Ignoring the brood nest — supering doesn’t fix a congested brood box. If the queen has no room to lay, address that directly with reversal or a split.
- Extracting uncapped honey — high-moisture honey ferments. Wait for capping or verify moisture is under 18.5 percent with a refractometer.
Supering rewards attention more than any single rule. Watch for white wax, heft the hive, and give room a step ahead of the bees during the flow — then stop and let them finish as it fades.
