Most beekeepers judge a colony by lifting the back of the hive and grunting. Light means feed it, heavy means leave it. That heft test works, but it's a single blurry data point taken whenever you happen to be standing there. A hive on a scale gives you a continuous record, and that record answers questions inspections cannot: exactly which day the nectar flow started, how many pounds a day the colony is bringing in, whether stores are draining faster than the cluster can afford in January, and whether the colony swarmed while you were at work.
Weight is the only colony metric you can collect without disturbing the bees. No smoke, no cracking propolis seals, no chilling brood on a 50°F morning. For colonies you want to leave alone — overwintering hives, cut-out recoveries, queen mating nucs — weight is often the only honest signal you get for weeks at a time.
What a Weight Curve Actually Looks Like
A healthy production colony traces a shape you'll recognize after one season. Understanding the normal shape is what makes deviations obvious.
- Winter (Nov–Feb) — a slow, nearly straight decline. Expect 4 to 8 pounds lost per month in a moderate climate, rising to 10–12 pounds per month in late winter once brood rearing restarts. The line should be smooth. Sudden steps mean something is wrong.
- Early spring (Mar–Apr) — the decline steepens even as dandelion and maple bloom. Brood rearing consumes stores faster than early forage replaces them. This is the starvation window, and it's the single most common time to lose a colony that looked fine in December.
- Nectar flow — a hard upward break. On a good day a strong colony gains 8 to 15 pounds. Exceptional flows — basswood, tulip poplar, sourwood in a wet year — can push 20 pounds in a day.
- Dearth — net flat or slightly negative, with the daily sawtooth pattern flattening out.
- Fall — a modest secondary rise from goldenrod and aster, then flat.
Inside each day there's a smaller pattern worth knowing. Weight drops in the morning as foragers leave, climbs through the afternoon as they return loaded, then falls overnight by 1 to 3 pounds as the bees evaporate water from fresh nectar. That overnight loss is a curing signal — a big overnight drop means they took in a lot of thin nectar the day before.
Net daily gain is what matters. A hive that gains 14 pounds by 6pm and gives back 4 overnight had a 10-pound day, not a 14-pound day. Compare same-time-of-day readings or you'll fool yourself.
Scale Options and What They Cost
You do not need a telemetry-enabled scale under every hive. Most of the value comes from one instrumented hive per apiary, used as a reference for the yard.
- Luggage scale plus lifting bar (~$15) — hook under the back edge of the bottom board, lift, record. Read half the hive's weight, roughly. Not absolute, but perfectly consistent for tracking change over time. This is the highest value-per-dollar option in beekeeping.
- Bathroom scale under a plank (~$30) — place a scale under one side, a block of the same height under the other. Double the reading. Precision around a pound.
- Dedicated platform scale (~$100–250) — a load-cell pad the hive sits on permanently. You walk over and read a display. Accurate to a few ounces.
- Connected hive scale (~$300–700 plus a subscription) — cellular or LoRa telemetry, hourly readings, temperature and humidity. Worth it if the yard is more than 30 minutes away or you're chasing flow data across multiple locations.
The cheap options are not a compromise on the metric that matters. Absolute weight is nearly useless — you don't care that the hive weighs 137 pounds, you care that it gained 22 pounds since Tuesday. A $15 luggage scale measures change just as truthfully as a $600 one, as long as you hook it in the same spot every time and log the reading. Reading Trouble in the Numbers
Once you have a baseline, four failure modes announce themselves in the weight data before they'd show in an inspection.
- Swarm — an abrupt loss of 3 to 6 pounds in under an hour, mid-morning to early afternoon, on a warm day. That's roughly 10,000–20,000 bees plus the honey in their crops walking out the door. With daily-only readings you'll see an unexplained single-day drop during a flow, which is nearly as diagnostic.
- Robbing — steep loss over a few hours during dearth, often 5–15 pounds in an afternoon, and it doesn't recover the next day. Distinguishable from a swarm by the season and by the fact that it repeats.
- Queenless decline — not a drop, an absence. During a flow when neighbors gain 6 pounds a day, the queenless colony gains 1 or 2, then flatlines as the population ages out with no replacements.
- Starvation risk — project the winter slope forward. A colony at 85 pounds in early January losing 8 pounds a month will hit its 45-pound bare-bones floor around mid-April. That's too close. Feed in February, not April.
The gap between an instrumented hive and its neighbors is more informative than either number alone. If the reference hive gains 9 pounds on Thursday, every other hive in that yard had forage available. A hive that didn't gain has an internal problem, not a forage problem.
Using Weight to Time Supers and Harvest
Super timing is the most immediately profitable use of weight data. The rule of thumb — super when the top box is 7 of 10 frames drawn and filling — requires opening the hive. Weight gets you there without the inspection.
Three consecutive days of net gain above 3 pounds means the flow is on and the colony needs space now, not next weekend. Bees that run out of storage room during a flow do two expensive things: they backfill the brood nest, which chokes the queen and triggers swarm prep, and they slow foraging because there's nowhere to put the load. Both cost you honey.
On the back end, the flow's end is unmistakable — daily gains fall below 1 pound and stay there for four or five days. That's the harvest signal. Waiting past it doesn't add honey, and it gives the colony time to move stores down out of the supers into the brood nest.
Deep math for estimating what you'll pull: a full deep frame of capped honey runs about 7 pounds, a full medium frame about 4.5 pounds, and a full shallow about 3 pounds. A medium super, full, weighs roughly 45 pounds with the woodenware. If your hive has gained 90 pounds since you added supers, you have about two mediums' worth — minus what the colony ate, which during a strong flow is less than you'd think.

Building a Multi-Year Flow Calendar
The compounding value of weight data shows up in year three. One season of data tells you what happened. Three seasons tell you what happens.
Log the start date and end date of every net-gain period, along with what was blooming. After a few years you'll have something no book can give you: your yard's specific flow calendar. Not "the spring flow runs May through June" from a regional guide, but "black locust hits between May 8 and May 16 in this yard, gives 40–60 pounds over nine days, and the dearth starts within four days of it ending."
That calendar changes decisions. You know to have supers on by May 1 rather than reacting in mid-May. You know to start feeding for winter on August 20 because your fall flow reliably underdelivers. You know that splits made before April 15 rebuild in time to make honey and splits made after don't.
Regional averages fail here because forage is hyper-local. Two yards eight miles apart can have flow dates a week off and yields that differ by half. The only data that describes your yard is data you collected in your yard.
Photograph or note what's blooming on the days with the biggest gains. Correlating weight spikes to specific plants tells you which forage actually pays, and which just looks pretty.

Practical Setup Details People Get Wrong
A few things will corrupt your data if you don't handle them deliberately.
- Rain adds weight — a soaked telescoping cover and wet woodenware can add 3–5 pounds that vanishes over the next day. Don't call it a nectar flow. Cross-check against rainfall before celebrating.
- Record every equipment change — adding a medium super adds 15–20 pounds of empty woodenware instantly. If you don't note it, your data shows a phantom gain. Same for removing frames, swapping bottom boards, or adding a feeder full of syrup.
- Level the platform — a scale sitting on soft ground will settle and drift over months. Set it on a paver or pressure-treated base, with a slight forward tilt for drainage built into the hive stand, not the scale.
- Read at the same hour — 8am readings and 6pm readings differ by 5–10 pounds during a flow. Pick one, preferably early morning before foragers leave, and stick to it.
- Note the feed — a gallon of 1:1 syrup weighs about 10.5 pounds. Feeding then measuring gain and calling it forage is the most common self-deception in weight tracking.
Weight Benchmarks Worth Memorizing
These numbers give you a frame of reference. Adjust them to your climate, but they hold reasonably well across most of temperate North America.
- Winter-ready gross weight, 10-frame Langstroth with two deeps: 120–140 pounds in the north, 90–110 in the mid-Atlantic and south.
- Bare equipment tare, two deeps plus bottom board and cover: roughly 45–55 pounds. Weigh your own empty setup once and write it down — it converts gross weight into actual stores.
- Emergency feeding threshold: when honey stores drop below 25–30 pounds, or when the back-lift test feels light in February.
- Strong single-day flow gain: 8–15 pounds net.
- Nucleus colony, 5 frames, ready to promote: gaining 2–4 pounds a day during a flow.
Track these against the specific hive rather than the apiary average. Colonies differ enormously — a 20-pound spread between the best and worst hive in a yard during the same flow is normal, and identifying the top producers is how you decide which queens to graft from next season. Starting Without Buying Anything
If you take one thing from this: start logging the back-lift test as a number today. Hook a $15 luggage scale under the back edge, lift until the hive just breaks contact, record the reading. Same hive, same hook point, same time of day, every visit.
Half-weight readings are not absolute but they're perfectly comparable to themselves. A hive reading 42 pounds on the back lift in October and 31 in February has lost about 22 pounds of stores. That's every bit as actionable as a telemetry feed, for the price of a lunch.
Add a second data point — a note about what's blooming — and you're already building the flow calendar. By the third season the numbers will be telling you when to super, when to feed, and which hives to breed from, and you'll wonder how you ever ran an apiary by grunting at the back of a box.
